The importance of preventive services

Many conditions that can affect the health, function, and appearance of the mouth may be prevented with professional dental care. Often, the effects of conditions such as early dental decay (tooth caries) or early gum disease (gingival inflammation or gingivitis) can be reversed. Routine dental preventive and maintenance services include professional cleanings and a comprehensive oral exam. The cleaning is essential to oral health because our hygienists remove plaque and tartar build-up that can not be completely removed even with your best efforts at home. 

The oral exam is vital because Dr. Efner can detect early-stage problems before they cause damage. Many of these problems are “silent” in their earliest stages in that they do not necessarily  produce symptoms. Or, if symptoms are present, they may be so subtle that patients do not think much of them. 

Additionally, oral cancer screenings are performed routinely during your visit with us, so that we can catch early signs of potential abnormalities and advise you of further steps necessary.

Preventive dentistry would not be complete without guidance and education, nutritional counseling,  product and homecare tool recommendations, that are tailored to each individual’s needs. We demonstrate proper oral homecare techniques to enhance your oral hygiene efforts at home. We may recommend products for conditions like dry mouth, acidic salivary pH, tooth hypersensitivity, etc. 

Professional preventive services include dental sealant placements to protect those teeth that are prone to decay, as well as customized oral appliances to protect the teeth and oral cavity from damage caused by habits, such as bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching). We will also screen you for signs of sleep-disordered breathing (mouth breathing, snoring, sleep apnea) and recommend a sleep study if necessary. If indicated, we then can fabricate oral appliances for mild-moderate sleep-disordered breathing.  

An authentic provider of whole-body care, Dr. Efner is a passionate and experienced yoga instructor. She is thrilled to offer Saturday yoga classes in the park to her patients – free of charge!
